Dr Shahram Amini is currently Group Leader for Coating Technologies within the Medical Devices business for Johnson Matthey. He is the founder of the Center for Coatings and Surface Solutions (CCSS) within the Medical Devices business. The centre’s intent is to increase Johnson Matthey’s technological offerings in the field of thin films, coatings, and surface sciences to the medical device industry. In his previous role, Dr Amini was a principal investigator within the advanced materials group at United Technologies Research Center in Hartford, Connecticut. In that role, he was responsible for basic, applied and exploratory research in a broad spectrum of technologies. Amongst his most recent inventions and achievements are development and deployment of a new class of metal matrix composite coatings also known as abradable coatings for Pratt & Whitney’s next generation military and commercial jet engines. He holds Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees all in materials science and engineering.
