Uncovering medical device failure modes and infection transmission pathways to inform better material testing methods, selection, and design: A panel discussion - Hosted By Eastman Chemical Company

Three short presentations will be given about transmission of infection via surfaces, voices from healthcare asking for safer, more durable devices, and polymer testing and selection for devices and equipment. A panel discussion will follow, linking the needs from healthcare to the role of the design engineer in creating safer devices that deliver better patient outcomes and lower cost of ownership.
Topics Covered:
1. Linda Lybert of the Healthcare Surfaces Summit (HSS) will share the greatest healthcare concerns related to infection and surface materials and why she founded the HSS which exists to reduce preventable infections through collaboration of industry, academia, science, regulatory, and service sectors by interrupting the transmission of surface-related pathogens in healthcare in support of community health.
2. Ellen Turner of Eastman will share testimonies across the healthcare value chain describing unmet needs and failure modes that will assist design engineers in making value-based decisions.
3. Dr. Yubiao Liu of Eastman will describe polymer test methods and test results obtained from exposing a wide variety of polymers to disinfectants, drugs, drug carrier solvents, and lipids. He will describe the importance of material selection and testing followed by processing and design tips which can enhance the durability of polymers.
